Budget cuts herald the IT Ice Age

I had a fascinating conversation with a company that offers a really cool take on using what you've got: RevStor with its SANware system.
"Administrators can also log on to any node and monitor and control system performance and configuration."

"...perhaps it's time to start rethinking which information and functional architectures are suitable, and RevStor is just one example, albeit a particularly interesting one, of how lateral thinking might redefine what we do and save money in the process."

The Data Center on Your Desktop

Corporate desktops average single-digit CPU utilization and less than 20% storage utilization. Can this unused capacity be put to work for the data center? Revstor says “yes!”
"It uses storage and a fast LAN you already have to create a self-managing backup cluster infrastructure."

"...it is an affordable choice for companies...without busting their budgets"

1/15/2008, Tapping PC Resources for Storage Needs
Tapping PC Resources for Storage Needs

A great article by Judy Mottl of internetnews.com.

"Tapping unused PC capacity can prove efficient and be as reliable as traditional storage attached networks (SANs) minus the associated costs and management headaches that come with most SANs."

"Bigger enterprises can tap these tools as well, as they have larger network resources, and the more nodes the better when it comes to better performance and reliability," said Reichman. "It can help reduce storage costs as it can take demand and pressure off those more expensive SANs, as long as you use these products for non-mission critical storage."

Searchstorage.com has done an article on RevStor and SANware with emphasis on user stories.

SANware runs natively on Windows (the other software offerings mentioned above run primarily on Linux-based servers) ...

He [Lee] said in his tests of moving a 1 GB file between two servers using a dedicated 100 Mbps Ethernet connection versus uploading the same 1 GB file to the RevStor network, the RevStor process was "appreciably faster."
